My pictures are an expressive and atmospheric response to walks I have taken and my knowledge of the landscape; they are a synthesis of observed landscape and my response to it. Mainly figurative, I combine traditional materials and techniques with my own method of applying paint, hardly using a paintbrush until towards the end of a painting for the details, to create a richly textural surface.
Using a mixture of egg tempera and oil to create chiaroscuro on either a gesso ground or on reclaimed oak, elm and pine boards, rubbing, staining, dragging and sanding, I create, shape and re-shape the surface, time and again.
Both the ground and paint are subjected to layers of construction, the events of preparation and painting interlinked. I work into a painting until it is a virtual map of the processes that shaped its existence. In asking questions of the medium of paint, I seek not just to invite the viewer to observe and enjoy but to understand some of the processes involved in the construction of the painting and to provoke the viewer to ask questions of their own response to the landscape.
